August 3rd, 2011. Padang Padang, Bali — Takayuki Wakita won the Trials of the 2011 Rip Curl Cup, held in four-to-five foot Padang barrels on Wednesday. The Japanese surfer has earned himself a spot in the main event, to be held on the biggest and best day of the year at Padang this season.
Also qualifying for the main event were Hawaii’s Makua Rothman and Bali local Rahtu Suargita, who finished second and third respectively. Rounding out the six-man Trials heat were Makua’s younger brother, Koa Rothman (Haw), Dedi Gun (Bali) and Tipi Jabrik (Bali).
